Disabled drivers & Passenger Scheme

 In order to help you purchase a specially adapted vehicle or wheel chair vehicle, the Hse and the revenue make certain concessions for the physically challenged, below are some of the allowances:

VRT  & VAT - · Disabled drivers can claim up to €9525 relief on the purchase of a     specially adapted vehicle specified for your exact needs.

· Disabled passengers or family member can claim up to €15875 relief on a specially adapted vehicle specified for your exact needs.

FUEL & ROAD TAX - You can also claim repayment of excise duty on Fuel used in your vehicle for the transport of a disabled person up to a maximum of 600 gallons per year also under the scheme your vehicle may be exempt from the payment of annual Motor Tax.    

Applying for Exemption of VRT - You need to send the following documents to the Central Repayments Office

· Fully completed Application Form DD1 - obtained from Local Health Office.

· The original Primary Medical Certificate if you are claiming for the first time. You must apply to your HSE Area for an application form – to obtain an application form from your Local Health Office , complete the application form and return it to the Medical Officer at your Local Health Office. The Medical Officer will then arrange an appointment to assess the level of your disability or family member. If you satisfy the requirements, you are granted a Primary Medical Certificate by the HSE.
This applies to both wheelchair drivers or passengers..
